Corey Ruiz Shooting: Family Seeks Answers After Fatal Police Encounter Sparks Protests in Madison

The fatal police shooting of Corey Ruiz, a 38-year-old man who was killed during an altercation with four Madison police officers, has sparked protests, calls for accountability, and multiple ongoing investigations.

According to Madison police, officers encountered Ruiz on Wednesday while responding to reports of suspicious activity. Authorities said Ruiz resisted arrest, leading to a physical struggle with four officers. During the confrontation, police allege Ruiz pulled a knife and injured one of the officers. Another officer then opened fire, fatally shooting Ruiz.

Police Chief John Patterson said officers first attempted to subdue Ruiz using a Taser, but it was unsuccessful. The officer who was reportedly injured by the knife then fired multiple shots. All four officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave while the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation conducts an independent review.

The shooting, which was partially captured on bystander cellphone video, quickly drew widespread attention and prompted demonstrations in Madison. Protesters gathered at the scene of the shooting and later at the Wisconsin State Capitol, demanding transparency and accountability as the investigation moves forward.

Ruiz’s family has questioned whether the use of deadly force was justified. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who is representing the family, called for criminal charges against the officer who fired the fatal shots, arguing that the force used was excessive. Family members have said they are seeking a full and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ruiz’s death.

Authorities have maintained that the investigation remains active and have urged the public to allow investigators to review all available evidence before reaching conclusions. Madison officials have also acknowledged community concerns, noting that the city does not currently equip officers with body cameras, a fact that has intensified scrutiny over the incident.

As the investigation continues, the shooting has reignited broader discussions about police use of force, transparency, and public trust in law enforcement. Community leaders have called for calm while emphasizing the importance of a thorough, independent review of the events that led to Corey Ruiz’s death.
