The fatal police shooting of Corey Ruiz, a 38-year-old man who was killed during an altercation with four Madison police officers, has sparked protests, calls for accountability, and multiple ongoing investigations.
According to Madison police, officers encountered Ruiz on Wednesday while responding to reports of suspicious activity. Authorities said Ruiz resisted arrest, leading to a physical struggle with four officers. During the confrontation, police allege Ruiz pulled a knife and injured one of the officers. Another officer then opened fire, fatally shooting Ruiz.
Police Chief John Patterson said officers first attempted to subdue Ruiz using a Taser, but it was unsuccessful. The officer who was reportedly injured by the knife then fired multiple shots.
